Google, SEBI Launch “Verified” Badge for Investment Apps on Play Store to Fight Fraud

In a significant step to curb rising financial fraud in India’s digital investment ecosystem, Google has partnered with the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) to introduce a “Verified” badge for investment-related apps on the Google Play Store. The initiative, launched on Wednesday, aims to help millions of retail investors easily identify legitimate financial platforms and avoid fraudulent apps that impersonate regulated companies.

Trust in a Tap: The new SEBI-verified badge on the Google Play Store helps India’s 140 million investors distinguish legitimate brokers from fraudulent clones.

Verified Badge for SEBI-Registered Apps

Under the new system, apps operated by SEBI-registered brokers and intermediaries will display a visible “Verified” label on their Play Store listing. The badge indicates that the app’s operator has been authenticated using SEBI’s official registry of regulated entities.

The rollout has already begun, with more than 600 financial services apps belonging to stockbrokers receiving the verification label.

Regulators say the feature will gradually expand to include other market participants such as investment advisers, portfolio managers, and online bond platforms registered with SEBI.

Protecting India’s Growing Investor Base

The initiative comes at a time when India’s retail investing community has expanded rapidly, now exceeding 140 million investors across the country.

With increased digital access to markets, regulators have also seen a surge in fake investment apps and misleading promotions, often designed to mimic the branding of well-known brokers or lure users with promises of unrealistic returns.

By clearly identifying verified platforms, the new badge aims to give investors a quick and reliable way to check whether an app is legitimate before downloading or investing through it.

SEBI Chairman Calls Initiative “Pioneering”

Speaking about the move, Tuhin Kanta Pandey, Chairman of the Securities and Exchange Board of India, described the collaboration as a “pioneering effort” to improve trust in India’s digital financial ecosystem.

He noted that as access to the stock market becomes increasingly digital, the risks of online impersonation and fraud are also rising. Pandey urged investors to remain cautious and follow a simple principle: “First verify, then invest.”

Google Emphasizes Platform Safety

Aditya Swamy, Managing Director at Google Play, said the company is committed to maintaining a safe and trustworthy app ecosystem for users.

According to Swamy, Google will directly integrate SEBI’s official database of registered entities to verify apps listed on the platform, ensuring the authenticity of investment services offered to users.

Crackdown on Fake Apps and Misleading Content

The verified badge initiative is part of a broader crackdown by SEBI on digital financial fraud.

Regulatory action so far includes:

  • Removal of 66 fake investment apps impersonating legitimate firms.
  • Over 130,000 instances of misleading online content taken down.
  • Collaboration with major tech platforms to restrict advertisements from unregistered financial entities.

SEBI is also working with companies such as Meta and Google to prevent fraudulent financial promotions from reaching potential investors through online ads.

Strengthening Digital Trust in Investing

Officials say the verification system represents a key step in building trust in India’s rapidly digitizing financial markets. As more investors rely on mobile platforms for trading and wealth management, regulators and technology companies are increasingly collaborating to ensure safety and transparency.

How Can Investors Identify SEBI-Verified Investment Apps on the Play Store?

Investors can now easily identify legitimate investment platforms on the Google Play Store by looking for the new “Verified” badge introduced through the collaboration between Google and the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI). The badge serves as a visual confirmation that the app belongs to a financial entity registered with SEBI.

1. Look for the “Verified” Label

When browsing or searching for an investment app on the Play Store, users will see a visible “Verified” badge next to the app name or within the app listing. This label indicates that the developer has been authenticated using SEBI’s official registry of regulated entities.

2. Check the Developer Information

Users should also review the developer name and company details listed on the Play Store page. Verified apps typically display the official name of the SEBI-registered broker or financial firm, helping investors confirm that the app truly belongs to the legitimate organization.

3. Review App Details and Links

A genuine investment app will usually include links to the company’s official website, customer support channels, and regulatory disclosures. Investors can cross-check these details with the information available on the official website of the Securities and Exchange Board of India.

4. Avoid Apps Without Verification

If an investment or trading app does not have the verified badge, investors should exercise caution. Fraudulent apps often imitate well-known brands or promise unusually high returns to attract users.
