PARIS, FRANCE — Legendary French football icon Zinedine Zidane has reportedly reached a verbal agreement with the French Football Federation (FFF) to become the next head coach of the France national football team following the conclusion of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The former World Cup-winning midfielder is expected to officially take charge in the summer of 2026, succeeding long-time manager Didier Deschamps.

According to multiple reports from French outlet Le Parisien and transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Zidane has already given a definitive “yes” to the FFF regarding the role. While the agreement has not yet been formally announced, the federation has reportedly finalized plans for Zidane to take over after the upcoming World Cup campaign.
End of Didier Deschamps’ Historic Tenure
Current France coach Didier Deschamps has confirmed that he will step down after the 2026 tournament, bringing an end to his remarkable 14-year tenure with the national team. Deschamps, who guided France to victory in the 2018 FIFA World Cup and another final appearance in the 2022 FIFA World Cup, recently said that 2026 would be a “suitable moment” to conclude his long spell in charge.

In a recent interview with Le Figaro, FFF president Philippe Diallo confirmed that the federation has already identified Deschamps’ successor.

He emphasized that the next manager must be a figure who “ticks many boxes” and commands the respect of the French public—qualities widely associated with Zidane.
Manchester United Interest Rejected
Zidane had also been linked with the managerial position at Manchester United following the departure of former coach Ruben Amorim. However, reports suggest the French legend is set to decline the Old Trafford opportunity in favor of leading the national team.
With Zidane reportedly committed to France, United are now considering alternative candidates, with interim boss Michael Carrick among the leading names being discussed for the permanent role.
