CANADA — A series of violent incidents across Canada in March 2026 has left several members of the Sikh community dead, raising concerns about organized crime, public safety, and possible hate-motivated violence. Authorities in multiple provinces are investigating the cases, each of which occurred under different circumstances.
Surrey Gang-Related Shooting
The most recent case involves Jasman Sekhon, a 27-year-old man who was shot dead on the night of March 28, 2026, in a townhouse complex in the Sullivan Heights neighbourhood of Surrey, British Columbia.
According to the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT), Sekhon had prior interactions with police and was believed to have links to the drug trade. Investigators suspect the killing was targeted and connected to organized crime activity.
IHIT spokesperson Sgt. Freda Fong said investigators are actively working to uncover the details of the homicide.
“Investigators are working diligently to determine the circumstances surrounding the homicide and identify all parties involved,” Fong said.
Witnesses reported seeing Sekhon being chased by a dark SUV moments before the attack. Two individuals allegedly stepped out of the vehicle and opened fire. Shortly after the shooting, police discovered a burned vehicle nearby—something authorities say is often associated with gang-related killings.
Highway Shooting in Alberta
Earlier in the month, Birinder Singh, 22, was killed in a highway shooting on March 14 near Leduc, Alberta. The incident occurred on Highway 2.
Police described the shooting as “unprovoked and random.” A friend who was in the car during the incident said they heard a single gunshot, after which the situation quickly turned tragic.
While police initially had no suspects, authorities announced on March 24 that 18-year-old Jimmy Gassner has been charged with second-degree murder in connection with the shooting.
Altercation
Another case occurred on March 13 in Fort St. John, British Columbia, where Gurkirat Singh Manocha, a 25-year-old international student, died following a violent altercation at a local boat launch. Police are continuing their investigation into the events that led to the confrontation.
Taxi Driver Shot in Saskatchewan
Also on March 13, Davinder Singh, a 31-year-old taxi driver, was fatally shot while working in North Battleford, Saskatchewan.
Authorities have charged two 19-year-old suspects—Kojac Adams and Garren Baptiste—in connection with the killing.
Growing Concern
The cluster of violent incidents occurring within the same month has sparked concern among community leaders and law enforcement agencies. While investigators say each case appears to have different motives, the events have highlighted ongoing issues related to gang activity, violent crime, and the need for thorough investigations.
