While the overall exterior design remains nearly identical, the biggest change comes inside. The new headphones are powered by Apple’s advanced Apple H2 chip, which enables a range of modern audio features previously available only on the AirPods Pro lineup.

Price, Pre-Orders and Availability

Apple has kept the pricing unchanged from the original model.

  • Price: $549 (U.S.)
  • Pre-orders begin: March 25, 2026
  • Release: Shipping and in-store availability expected in early April 2026

The AirPods Max 2 will be available in Midnight, Starlight, Blue, Purple, and Orange color options.

H2 Chip Brings Major Audio Upgrades

The transition from the previous Apple H1 chip to the H2 chip allows the new headphones to deliver significantly improved computational audio performance.

Stronger Active Noise Cancellation

Apple says the updated Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) system can reduce environmental sounds up to 1.5 times more effectively than the previous model. This improvement is particularly noticeable with constant background noise such as airplane engines or city traffic.

Adaptive Audio and Conversation Awareness

The AirPods Max 2 introduces intelligent listening modes powered by the H2 chip:

  • Adaptive Audio: Automatically blends noise cancellation and transparency based on the surrounding environment.
  • Conversation Awareness: Detects when the wearer begins speaking, lowers the media volume, and enhances nearby voices for easier conversations.

Apple Intelligence Enables Live Translation

One of the most notable additions is real-time language translation, delivered directly into the user’s ears.

Powered by Apple Intelligence, the feature can translate conversations in real time, potentially making travel and multilingual communication easier for users.

Improved Audio Quality and Lossless Support

Apple has also upgraded the internal audio hardware.

  • High dynamic range amplifier for cleaner sound output.
  • Enhanced Spatial Audio with better sound localization..
  • 24-bit / 48 kHz lossless audio when connected through a wired USB-C connection.
  • Ultra-low latency for improved synchronization during video playback or gaming.

New Smart Controls and Features

The Digital Crown on the headphones now supports additional functions.

  • Camera Remote: Press the crown to trigger the shutter on a connected iPhone or iPad camera.
  • Siri Gestures: Users can respond to **Siri by nodding their head “yes” or shaking it “no”. Users can now use the “Siri” wake word instead of just “Hey Siri.”

Durability and Battery Life

Apple has also improved durability with an IP54 rating, providing resistance against dust and splashes.

Despite the new features, battery life remains unchanged, offering up to 20 hours of listening time with Active Noise Cancellation and Spatial Audio enabled.

Apple Highlights Sustainability

According to Apple’s director of Audio Product Marketing, Eric Treski, the H2 chip helps deliver the “ultimate all-day listening experience,” combining improved sound quality with smarter audio features.

Apple also emphasized environmental improvements in the product’s construction. The company says the AirPods Max 2 uses 100% recycled rare earth elements in its magnets along with recycled gold and tin in the circuit boards.

With its updated chip, smarter listening modes, and AI-powered features, the AirPods Max 2 aims to refresh Apple’s premium headphone lineup while maintaining the design that made the original model recognizable.
