SARLI, Himachal Pradesh — In a dramatic act of survival, an 18-year-old student from Sarli village in Himachal Pradesh’s Solan district fought off and killed a leopard with his bare hands after the animal attacked him on the morning of March 9, 2026.
The teenager, Pravesh Sharma, sustained minor injuries but survived the encounter after a struggle that lasted several minutes.
Leopard Attack During Early Morning Walk
According to local accounts, Pravesh Sharma, an Industrial Training Institute (ITI) student, had left his home around 7 a.m. to fetch milk from nearby fields. While walking through the farmland, a leopard—believed to be between one and three years old—suddenly pounced on him.
The unexpected attack triggered a fierce struggle between the teenager and the wild animal in the open fields of Sarli village, located in the Arki subdivision of Himachal Pradesh.
A 10-Minute Fight for Survival
Witnesses and local reports say the life-and-death battle lasted around 10 to 12 minutes. During the struggle, Pravesh attempted to stop the animal from biting his neck—often the most dangerous point of attack in such encounters.
In a desperate move to save himself, he grabbed the leopard by its jaws, preventing it from delivering a fatal bite. Using stones and rocks lying nearby, he repeatedly struck the animal’s head until it eventually died.
Minor Injuries but Major Courage
Despite the intensity of the attack, Pravesh escaped with multiple scratches and minor injuries, but no life-threatening wounds. He was quickly taken to a hospital in Arki for medical examination and treatment.
Doctors treated his injuries and discharged him the same day after confirming that his condition was stable.
“It Was a Matter of Life and Death”
Speaking about the terrifying experience, Pravesh said he initially felt extreme fear when the leopard attacked.
“I was terrified at first but fought back… it was a matter of life and death,” he said while recounting the incident.
His courage has since drawn praise from villagers and officials alike.
Villagers Blame Authorities for Inaction
Residents of Sarli village claimed they had already warned the Forest Department about a leopard sighting days before the attack.
According to villagers, the animal had been spotted in the area on March 6, and they had requested officials to capture it to prevent a possible attack. However, locals alleged that no preventive action was taken in time.
Forest Department Provides Relief
Forest officials visited the village following the incident and acknowledged the unusual nature of the encounter. As immediate assistance and recognition of the teenager’s bravery, the department provided ₹5,000 as relief support to Pravesh Sharma.
Officials also indicated that they would monitor the region more closely to prevent similar incidents.

Just a few days earlier, on March 5, a young leopard was reportedly killed during a clash with locals in the Sirmaur district. The event sparked debate about the increasing tensions between wildlife and rural communities living near forested areas.
Experts say shrinking forest habitats, expanding settlements, and easier access to farmland often bring wild animals like leopards into human-dominated areas.
